Silver Jewellery | Miniature Teddy Bears
Janis began making jewellery over forty years ago, studying at Nottingham Art School and more recently at Hereford College of Arts where she gained City and Guilds (with distinction) and Open College Network qualifications in silver-smithing. She also attended the Birmingham School of Jewellery where she gained a passion for pearls and trained to advanced level in pearl threading and knotting.
Whilst Janis particularly enjoys making unusual chains necklaces and bracelets in silver, her range includes a variety of other items, including: charms, spoons, keyrings and earrings, some incorporating semi-precious stones and beads. She seeks out beautiful and unusual semi-precious beads and pearls, making them into desirable necklaces. Janis also offers a professional bead and pearl threading/knotting service.
Her commissions have included a 1:12 sized silver tea set (every item from teapot to sugar tongs to teacups and saucers) and copper pots and pans for a dolls’ house. She has also made special occasion pearls with customised fasteners and birthday charm bracelets.
Alongside her jewellery Janis makes miniature teddy bears, rabbits and occasionally mice, using a range of fabrics: mohair, plush and felt. Some of them sport hand crafted or knitted accessories, anything from tiny rulers, pencils and books to duffel coats, slippers and scarves. She designs her own patterns, in this she is influenced by traditional bears particularly those made by Steiff, and she enjoys giving her creations individual expressions and characters.
Janis’s recent commissions have included: a Halloween bear, a magician, Santa and Snowbear Christmas tree baubles and a 60th birthday bear featuring a miniature book of opera scores, a red beret and flamboyant red bow.
Janis regularly exhibits with the Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen, Blue-Ginger Gallery Cradley online shop, and Worcester Cathedral shop. More examples of her work can also be seen on her website and in her Etsy shop.
She is available for talks and tuition in bead and pearl threading and making miniature teddy bears. She has previously run courses for the Jewellery and Allied Industries Training Council, the WI and other adult groups.
